Caregivers of persons living with dementia (PLDs) can face high caregiving burden and distress related to responsive behaviours and psychiatric morbidity. The paper examines how this is associated with healthcare utilisation of the PLD in Singapore.
The paper finds that caregiver distress from a PLD’s responsive behaviour can result in higher tendencies for PLDs requiring hospital emergency services. Caregiver burden can also result in PLDs needing longer stays in hospitals.

Severe dementia & behavioural problems are significant predictors of caregiver depression, especially for primary caregivers.
The paper offers an integrated framework to aid the understanding and prevention of caregiver depression in dementia. Such frameworks will be important to develop approaches to prevention not just after the depression has manifested, but before it can cause any adverse effects.
Jiangbo Ying, Philip Yap, Mihir Gandhi and Tau Ming LiewCaring for Persons with Dementia: Towards a Sustainable Community-Based Dementia Care System
Higher caregiver burden is related to caregiving responsibilities, finance, work-life balance, and concerns about the future.
Qualitative findings detail other aspects of caregiver burden in more detail, including the lack of knowledge on how to provide dementia-specific care for people living with dementia; the negative impact on caregivers own health and social wellbeing; and the strain of juggling caregiving, employment, finances, and other family responsibilities.
Centre for Aging Research & EducationPerceived Unmet Needs of Informal Caregivers of People with Dementia in Singapore
This study explored the experiences and challenges of informal caregivers in Singapore to identify the multi-dimensional unmet needs. The identified findings from the study were combined with inputs from professionals to create a checklist of caregivers’ needs for dementia.
Caregivers largely expressed unmet needs for information, services, respite, and emotional and financial support. Caregivers also strongly expressed the need for emotional support to overcome the psychological and physical burden of care.
